Description of Warden

The University of London operates a student support structure in all the intercollegiate halls of residence. Each has a Warden, who serves in a part-time residential post, and a team of Senior Members. The Warden, who complements your academic advisor or personal tutor at College or Institute, is responsible for pastoral care. Effective pastoral care by the Warden and the Senior Members requires that we are visible and approachable to residents.

The Warden at LPH is Dr Derrick Chong, who has a full-time faculty position in the School of Management at Royal Holloway, University of London; he also holds an adjunct position at Sotheby’s Institute of Art on the MA in Art Business. He is originally from Canada where he read business administration (Toronto and McGill) and art history (York) before completing a PhD (London). In addition to meeting him on the designated arrival date, which includes a welcome reception in the evening, he is readily available throughout the academic year.  He can be contacted by email or to arrange meetings, usually Monday to Friday in the evenings and before brunch on Saturday or Sunday.

Description of Senior Members

The Warden is assisted by five Senior Members, who are full-time PhD students of the University of London. Photos and profiles of the SMs are on the bulletin boards by the reception. As peer students, who are appointed to a role of responsibility, the Senior Members help residents to integrate to living at LPH; enhancing the social and community life means that the SMs continue to be a point of visible contact. The Senior Members are, with the Warden’s approval and support, administrators and moderators of the LPH Facebook group, which is restricted to the current residents of LPH. Incoming residents will be emailed with the contact details.

In addition, a Duty Senior Member is a key point of contact when the Hall Management office is closed (namely 18.00 to 08.00 Monday to Friday and all day on Saturday and Sunday). The Duty Senior Member can be contacted via the reception: face-to-face; 020 7087 3040 from a mobile; or dial 0 or 3040 from the handset in your room.
